Mr. Maiers was the Budget Officer at the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station (now Naval Undersea Warfare Center) when he was elected to the Audit Committee of the Navy Yard Metal Trades Credit Union in 1963 (which later became Kitsap Credit Union).

He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1974, served on and chaired all standing committees until he became the Chair of the Board of Directors from 1981 to 1983, a period of outstanding expansion and growth.

In reflecting on Kitsap Credit Union’s growth, Mr. Maiers has seen the Credit Union grow from a main office in the shipyard cafeteria, with cubbyhole branches at Keyport and the Naval Ammunition Depot, Bangor to the current network of modern branches, and assets grow from $5,400,000 to nearly $700,000,000, high speed computers replaced manual operations and 24-hour ATMs have appreciably shortened teller lines.

He notes that deregulation of the financial market place has allowed credit unions to become more competitive and allowed them to provide services that were forbidden under previous regulated operations.  According to Mr. Maiers, the challenge to the Credit Union Board is to incorporate this freedom from regulation into policy which will lead to operations that provide members the services they desire, while maintaining the integrity of the Credit Union’s assets.

His primary goal, is, and always has been, to make Kitsap Credit Union the supreme financial institution in West Sound, by being not just competitive, but by being the leading financial institution by providing higher quality service, paying higher dividends, and charging lower rates than all other institutions.

Mr. Maiers retired from the Board in the fall of 1999 and was subsequently elected to the honorary position of Director Emeritus.
